It might surprise you to know that there is no real legal definition of a townhouse or townhome. While there are clear definitions of what is a coop and what is a condo there is no corresponding definition of a townhome.

The term 'townhome' is an architectural description of a residential unit attached to other such residential units on each side. Townhomes may or many not have a tiny yard area in front or in back. Many have an attached garage but many others do not.

When buying a townhome consider hiring the services of a realtor experienced in townhome purchases. Buying a townhome can be a trickier procedure than buying a single family dwell unit (a house). Because you will have neighbors in close proximity there will be lots of things you will want to look into before making your final purchase decision.
